Mick..whereabouts in Wallgate are you from.

Comment by: Mick on 7th November 2016 at 17:20

Im not from Wallgate Maureen, My first memories of the place was walking down to some mucky dimly lit streets on a wet misty night and finding a pub full of funny folk called the Buck int Vine as a 16 year old from Shevy, we got our pints and legged it back up to the Wigan town centre
Next time I was there I was helping to put out the big fire at Taylors mill when I was in the AFS

Yes Mick there were some characters in Wallgate..did you never read the longest thread ever over on 'People'..there was so much on there..re Wallgate...the thread was aptly named 'Wallgate Streets and Families' it only lessened and eventually ceased due to one of the gents passing away.

Delightful.
No one can possibly say these are pleasant areas of Wigan.

Comment by: Maureen on 7th November 2016 at 22:33

Pleasant is what you make it Stuart..no..they weren't the most attractive of areas, but the community was second to none..I personally couldn't have asked for a better childhood..

Mick, you were indeed privileged ...he was a lovely man.

The lane was named after the Wilgoose family, who were involved in a lot of different businesses in Wigan in the early 19th century, and owned land in that area.
Wigan council evidently saw fit to add another 'L' to their surname.
