My Mum always used to call this 'Fishy Nick', because of the old fish market at the other end. I used to run down there holding my nose.
Oh, what memories.... I loved Freeman, Hardy and Willis! Timpson's Shoe-shop was on the other side of the entry. There was also a clothes-shop nearby called Van Allen's.....does anyone remember it? Thanks for photos, Ron.
Absolutely Irene bought from all those shops.
At the other end of little Hope Street, on the right, wasn't it the side entrance to B.H.S., and you emerged into Woodcock Street?.
That's correct Albert - you came out at the bottom of Woodcock St, at its junction with Hope St.
Oh to be again, pass again, shop again , feel again, know again , that you are here. Gone again , want again , hope again, wish again .. Sadly..you ..are ..not..
but better to have been than never have been
If I remember rightly (and I don't always), Freeman Hardy Willis has been demolished but the shop to the right is now Beaverbrooks.
Freeman Hardy Willis Wigan we moved to Coppull as my dad was the new Manager of this shop in Wigan!
