Another much loved part of Wigan left to rot Any other town would look after these sort of places. It's part of the Heritage of the town
Thanks to Trevor Smith( Smith's Book Shop) for the photograph.

As teenagers we loved going to listen to records in the music shop..went down King Street some months ago,the first time in ages, just couldn't believe how scruffy it looked..not just Grimes arcade but the whole street..how on earth have we got to this...the arcade was a lovely memory for yesterday's teenagers.

Agreed, Maureen. The King Street Gang have ruined our access to these Wigan Landmarks. Neil has been emailing you.....have you received the emails? He isn't sure he has sent to correct address.

The music shop's name was Grimes. A Wigan Borough Police Sergeant's wife, worked there.

Bought my first record from Grimes with my Paper round money. Rolling Stones Little Red Rooster, about 1962/3 and I've still got it.

I was 13 and my dad bought me a dansette record player (grey and red)from Grimes, I thought I was a princess. Later in my working life I used to work at Ellis Sayer and Henderson(solicitors) it was first office going out of arcade into King street, everywhere was clean and well kept, not like present time, such a shame.

Hi Val, I also worked ar Ellis Sayer & Henderson starting as a junior in 1966 then became Graham Byrnes Secretary later and left in 1973 to have our first baby. We used to come out of side door at lunchtime which was inside the arcade down two flights of steps and there was a huge safe with a very thick iron door on the bottom floor of the arcade which we opened with a big iron bar where we used to keep all the deeds and important documents. King Street in those days was one if the most respected streets in Wigan when Solicitors wore bowler hats and used to raise them to acknowledge you as you went past, a far cry from the state its in today

Hiya Maureen, you are right about respectability, I remember Mr Hopwood Sayer, he used to lift his stick up to stop traffic and cross the road he was a gent. I used to love Mr Tim, he was great. King Street was a respectable street, not like today, So sad ! ! I was there in 1967, got married then. The girls were lovely
