This painting reminds me of a book I have, The White Cockade Passes, a Jacobite tale set in Wigan & in which the church plays a starring role.
Helen that's a scarce book Ive been after it for ages.

Helen how lucky you are to have that book I have also been looking for that book for ages. I remember as a child the headmaster of St. Thomas' school in Caroline St. Wigan used to read it to all the class it is written by Kathleen Fiddler I think she was from Wigan, lovely memories.
Ron..I know it's a rare book,but I'll keep having a look in Beech Hill book cycle for you...you never know.
I do believe the true picture should show headstones not cows and sheep as this was a burial ground at this time ,
