Standish Peace Gate as proposed

This scan of the cover of St Wilfrid's Parish Magazine of February 1924 was evidently used as part of the fund-raising appeal to erect the Memorial, which was eventually dedicated in 1926. The section to the right of the tower was not in the final building.
The proximity of 'Spite Row' on the left can be judged from this drawing - and it is clear that it would obscure the view of the gate from a wide angle. The demolition of the row in 1930 may have been as much to clear that view as to reveal the church itself.
Inside the Peace Gate are the Parish's Memorials for WW1 and 2, and five plaques commemorating those who fell, and those awarded military honours, from various Wigan Coal & Iron Company pits in Standish. The story I have been told is that they were originally sited at the pits themselves, but when the pits were closed they were removed to the safety of Standish Council Offices on the High Street. It was only when those offices were closed that they were placed in the Peace Gate. Does anyone know more about this, please?

Reverend. I did ask a question of you, second item, page 2. You may not have seen it. All these churches hold a wealth of nostalgia, and relevant history.

Albert - Standish is in a different Diocese from most of Wigan, so wasn't involved in the 'Soul in the Park' event. I've heard no official estimate of numbers, but there's a good four-page spread of pics of the event in this week's Observer.

Thank you Reverend. Just my inquisitive nature as to how the event went. Too far away to obtain the Wigan Observer.

Albert, a few weeks ago you put a programme on the site of the last Whit Monday Walk, I wonder if you would lend it to me for an exhibition I'am organising . Also if anyone has photographs of Whit Monday I could use in the exibition ,I will of course return them after scanning . In addition if anyone would be interested in making a contribution to a audio history of the event for future generations to able to reference ,who knows in years to come your voice could be listened to people still unborn. If interested in either of the projects please e mail. Tom.

Tom. After I had entered the programmes on W.W.A., I sent them to the Wigan Heritage Centre for their keeping. You have my permission to borrow them, from them, to use in your exhibition. If you've got to show them some sort of permission, you can copy, and paste this entry, I will also give them a bell.

Tom. My wife has a couple of photographs. How do I get them to you?. She went to St John's R.C. School. Her brother in law was John Harte. He was the Mayor of Wigan 1971/72.
