I thought 'Links' referred to a golf course near to the sea?
Taken from the 'Cunnery field', where Rivington Drive now is.
The building on the course in the middle distance, is the original golf club, the site is now occupied by the greenkeeper's bungalow.
The track with telegraph poles along it to the right of the building, is now the public footpath running between Back School Lane and Spencers Lane.

Geographic location and course management.
Links courses tend to be on, or at least very near to, a coast and the term is typically associated with coastal courses, often amid dunes, with few water hazards and few, if any, trees."
This plc true has just reminded me of something my dad jokingly said to me he said what's up with your face it favers thas eaten all crabs in dean wood in a Wigan twang has anyone ever head this saying I cannot ask dad he is no longer with us
He could have meant crab apples, Serve f.
There used to be quite a few crab apple trees at the Gathurst end of the wood.
