The Haigh Bus No 8A ready to leave the Market Place on a wet miserable day in the 1950-60's

Remember catching this bus Ron to the bleachworks, always packed on Fridays.

My Grandparents and most of my relatives lived in Aspull/Haigh. I do not recall ever getting a bus there from the stop shown in the picture in the 1950's /60s. We always got a bus from Station Road. Was this a temporary stop ?

Just behind the post with the one-way direction arrow are the underground toilets.

Didn't this bus go up Wigan Lane to the Bleach Works and then Red Rock to Haigh

Ernest
You could get a wash-and-brush up in those toilets with an attendant!
I remember leaving my chronograph watch there and rushin back to retrieve it. It was still there. Honest days!!

Carolaen, you probably remember boarding the No 17 bus from Station Road, quite close to the Ritz, which went to Haigh via Geenough St, Whelley, New Springs and Aspull. The 8A bus went via Red Rock, Meadow Pit.

JJP - you're right. I just find it amazing that in all those years of living in Wigan (I left in 1970) and getting buses, I never knew of this service which went "the other way" to Haigh - if that doesn't sound peculiar.

No 17 went through Haigh to Blackrod Black Horse then turned round and went back the same way

Carolaen, no that doesn't sound peculiar at all, very few would of heard of this service unless they actually used it. If memory serves me correct, it was a limited service that was more aimed at the 'Bleachworks' needs and would not have run as often as the other buses, probably its main purpose was for the workers from Wigan and area to reach their place of work.

Brilliant another bus.

No bus goes to Haigh these days. The nearest service is the 575/576 Wigan to Bolton which will drop you off at the junction of St David's Crescent and Haigh Road, Aspull.
