Lancashire United 320 service to Liverpool in Walthew Lane Platt Bridge 6 April 1976. The top of the railway bridge was removed several years ago.

The times I walked under that bridge! Thanks, Tom for a great picture.

Just passed Moss Lane.

The top of the railway bridge was removed because of the scrap metal they haven't removed the one in Liverpool Road
because it is concrete D.C.

Spring View CC in the background looking through the Bridge. That seems to have been there for ever. Still going as strong as ever.

You and me both Wigwann.

Tom, I knew this was one of yours as soon as I saw it.A very nicely composed pic. Top quality as usual.

I never walked under the bridge, but I rode by bike under it a lot, sometimes passing the bus as it puttered on Walthew Lane.

Dozens of Wigan lads caught the 320 to the Old Boston Coal Board training centre at Haydock.

Great pic Lord Sutch!
Didnt the Lancs Utd Buses terminate on Market Square?

Comment by: priscus on 10th March 2016 at 00:36

I think the 320 service was a joint service with Ribble.

Comment by: John Morris on 10th March 2016 at 10:57

Good shot Tom! This was as Priscus commented a joint service with Ribble and also with Wigan Corporation and St. Helens corporation. D.C. the bridge span was removed because it had been rendered unsafe because of rust especially were the track bed was; there were great big holes in it and as people used the old track for walking there was a great danger of someone falling through. I doubt that it would have had enough scrap value to warrant the effort.

Great picture Tom.The beginning of the long hot summer. It gives out a sense of peace and a slower pace to life.In fact I'll bet you couldn't take this picture these days, there would be too many other vehicles around to spoil it

Good point Derick about the scrap metal. But it would have cost much more money removing the bridge and clearing up the area than the scrap value. The real story behind this is that the abutment was unsafe to hold the bridge. Remember Derick there's some weight in coal trains, it carried coal from Bickershaw to Fiddlers Ferry, this ended in 1992 when the pits finished.

As a lad I remember walking under the bridge on the pavement to the right. The walls were clad with ceramic tiles similar to a bathroom which was quite odd, however it did have a good echo which was good for a shouting match !

You would think that the council would remove that wall now and make the road straight, instead of the nasty bend.
