Cautopates was one of the torch bearing figures found in a subterranean Mithras shrine. He stood next to Mithras along with his pal Cautes who also has a torch. Examples of these have been found in Manchester and Chester but this one turned up in Appley Bridge and was on loan to Ribchester Roman Museum in the 1970s.
Sad that he lost his head.
The statue was found by Thomas Forest Kelly.

Cathy: Never mind Cathy it'll come in handy as a door stop.

As far as I can remember it was about 2'6" high, so maybe a bit weighty for a doorstop. Nice garden ornament though.

It should be more of a cute little pixie hat really.
I just googled 'Mithras Temple' and it seems that a stone head turned up in London 60 odd years ago. There's a picture (the head, complete with pixie hat) on a BBC news blog from a couple of years ago, under the title 'Temple of Mithras. How do you put London's Roman shrine back together?' A bit of sand and cement and the job's a good un.

If it's the lost Appley Bridge 'head' a campaign should be mounted to bring it home to Wigan. Would make a startling contrast sat next to the Wiend "HEAD" that Vb and others love so much!

Oh Lordy, promise me you'll buck up veebee, Yes, I know he's wearing a frock, but Cowtwopats is actually a bloke. He's probably Kitty Beawt Yed's boyfriend, they do seem to share certain physical irregularities ...........By the way, there's only one ' R ' in ' occur '.

I mean the statue Oz! It's not got a head!

Comment by: Ozymandias. on 7th February 2016 at 23:44

Oh yes, I see what you mean veebee, there IS no way of checking. Just out of interest, Cautopates' torch is held downward facing, whereas the torch of Cautes is held upwards. The difference evidently reflecting the contrast between spring and autumn, or light and darkness, or something of that ilk. No doubt someone more knowledgeable than me will provide the answer. Regards. Ozy.
