My friend lives in that house..I've only just realised how nice that little wall is...mind you it has all been covered by trees, hedges etc since this was taken.
This view is looking up Wigan Lane.
Although it obviously doesn't show up in this shot, that tarmac would have no doubt been red when the photo was taken. There remains very little, if at all any, of it visible now.
That red metalled road along Wigan Lane was by far the best in Wigan, it was superb giving a very smooth ride.
Surprisingly, at the time of writing 717 people have clicked on this photo of Wigan Lane. Does this speak of a preference for Wigan as it was rather than Wigan as it is?
No doubt whatsoever, Dennis. It was a good place to live back then.
The stone wall was there long before the houses. I recall as a very small boy in the thirties , sitting in a wagon on this site whilst the driver and his mate dug and loaded building sand here
These houses were built early to mid-fifties. Prior to then there was a stone wall running up to to the older properties on Greenhill and around the corner into Sittingbourne Rd.
