I loved Lowe's. It always reminded me of Grace Brothers in "Are You Being Served?". The carpets and the creaky floors and staircases; (Mrs. Slocombe and Mr Humphreys wouldn't have been out of place), and the café upstairs, which was quiet and sedate. They had a ghost, too, and a friend of mine who worked there told me of a colleague's dog who refused to enter. Since Lowe's was demolished, I believe that the staff at the bank which now occupies the site have seen her.
Lowes was a lovely store to go into as was Pendleburys and the Co-op at the bottom of Greenough St. I used to frequent them for items for my bottom drawer when the sales were on. I cannot remember why Lowes had to be demolished! it was so much a part of Wigan.
That ghost, it wouldn't have been my old French teacher by any chance would it Irene?, Kitty beawt yed?
Yes, I believe it was, Eddie. She used to roam the corridors shouting "Edee, ou-est-vous, Edee?". I told her you were in The Market Tavern, suppin' ale!
No Irene, " ou es toi ", our relationship was on a more person level. If you follow my drift.
Leesen carefully, I will say zees only once... Ooh, La la, Eddie and Madame Beawt Yed! (I was uncertain about the French, actually.......it WAS a long time ago since I was a schoolgirl!
When girls looked like girls.
Another Great Photo Of Bye- Gone Wigan And Not A Chip Carton In Sight
Joe Thomas; have you seen the large amount of chewing gum on the ground in the Market Place these days?
This picture has reminded me of another long-gone feature of Corporation (and LUT) buses - they showed the destination on the back of the bus, as well as the front and side near the door.
I remember once reading these rear destination rolls were done away with once one-man operation became common in GMT days. On a one-man bus the driver couldn't leave his (or her) cab with the cash box unattended to go and change the rear display at every terminus, so they became redundant even on those routes which still ran with a conductor.
Irene and Eddie speaking French on WW what's the world coming too..I never had one French lesson either at st Williams of Cardinal Newman but I do remember a chap going into the bookies on Manchester road Ince and putting a shilling win on a horse called. Petty Tetty hole...
The bookie told him its name was petite etoile (little star). Incers!!!!
Gerry..that is hilarious..I can't stop laughing at that.
I have Ernest and cost a bomb to shift
