my Grandfather born about 1900 grew up in new Springs and he used to tell me that the canal there froze regularly and they used to have curling matches on it. It must have been a very deep freeze to allow such a weight of people on it, plus the disruption to the barges must have been enormous. Anyone have any evidence, newspaper references etc to these events, or was it just a story - he had many of them especially after a session in the Queens Head in Aspull.
