Was demolished in 1966. See 1st photo in Album, Places, Standish Lower Ground.
The Wigan Corporation double decker buses didn`t have much clearance! Bus fare Wigan to Shevington in 1958 was 4d - it`s £2.60 right now.
Do you know when this photo was taken, Mick?
Never knew that double deck buses had ran to Shevington Ernest, I'd only ever seen single deck buses and always thought they were used because of this bridge and the other low bridge at Mill Lane.
I dont know Ernest
Yes we did have double decker buses on the 333 Shevy route, one once run off the road on well brew ( Z bends)
I am sure it was there in 1969 when I moved to Shevington
Used to play on this bridge as a kid when I lived on Wigan Lower Road nr John Pit having moved from Crooke. Happy childhood memories playing on slag heaps of John Pit and the Tippler at Crooke (health and safety not heard of then).
Great photo Thanks.
Yes I remember this bridge in Standish Lower Ground. Used to travel from Shevington to Wigan Grammar School from September 1960 to July 1966 and low deck double decker buses were used on the route as well has single deckers. The 333/343 route was a joint Ribble / Wigan Corporation route and Ribble also used low bridge double deckers. Back loaders with no doors on and driver had his own cab and access was gained from the offside of the vehicle. Good Old days
