This is the hospital badge given to all nurses trained at RAEI when qualifying as State Registered Nurses. After 1970 the hospital badge had the combined crests of Wrightington Wigan and Leigh

It must feel a privilege, to be competent, to wear the badge. Is it still awarded?.

Once nurse training moved from 'in hospital' to university training, badges no longer issued

Sadly I lost my hospital badge about a year after receiving it. It felt more precious than the state badge somehow - I think because of loyalty to our hospital and felt more personal. Still have my state badge in my jewellery box and even after 40 + years still looks like new

I still have my RAEI hospital badge we had to wait months for them after qualifing as the lettering was enamelled on. As you say more important to me than my state registration badge. Wigan School of Nursing was the best in the North West. Happy Days

forgot to say the emblem was the Prince of Wales who opened the infirmary. The emblem was incorporated in theatre floor with the motto Ich Dien meaning I Serve

I also remember the Centenary Celebrations - a dinner dance held on two separate occasions to allow all to attend and also the gift of china mug with the dates and motive on. Still have and wouldn't part with it for anything

50yrs ago I started my nurse training at RAEI, it took me three and a half years to earn my Hospital badge, I've lots of Happy memories of my time at Wigan infirmary. If you went to the Ritz cinema in your uniform they let you in for free! Don't remember any other perks in those days.

Eileen, How times have changed, I work in a large Merseyside Hospital and if the nurse's go out in uniform they could be reported and action taken for cross contamination.I was a patient in Wigan Infirmary when I was younger took the top of my thumb off in a machine! The nurse's where fantastic even got the lads on the ward a few can's on a night,they always had a smile for you no matter what size needle they had ready to give you, so all the nurse's who got this badge should be proud they deserve it.

I also lost my badge It had my maiden name on it

Going through my late grandmothers things I have found a RAEI badge from February 1958. Does anyone remember a Joan Greenwood? I know the chances are few and far between just very curious!

I also still treasure my RAEI badge.It reminds me of very happy days back in the seventies.Living in the nurses home,swapping clothes,finding sugar in the bed,and sneaking up the fire escape after midnight,priceless.

Didn’t get the silver one but got the RAEI badge in 1983 sadly lost it but trying to find a replacement anyone know where I can get one ? Thanks
