Two Wigan Corporation Buses at their respective bus stops in Station Road on a wet and miserable day in the 1950's

I bet it was a Monday, Ron!
I can recall Ena Sharples in Corrie, years ago, saying to Martha Longhurst -
Your face is like a wet Monday in Wigan!

Comment by: David Halliwell on 6th April 2015 at 12:08

Lily, the film showing at the 'Ritz', was released in March 1953 so this could be March/April of that year.

Comment by: Grannieannie on 6th April 2015 at 12:35

If I had behaved myself on the current shopping trip my Mum would buy me, in addition to the Sunny Stories already bought in the Little Arcade, a quarter of Opera Fudge from Woolworth's sweet counter. Out of the side door and quickly to the Platt Bridge stop and if it was raining as in the photo upstairs on the bus so Mum could have a Woodbine and me a piece of the fudge on the way home.

Comment by: Henry7 on 6th April 2015 at 14:02

Remember going to the Ritz and watching the same film 3 times when it was continuous.

Comment by: Daisy on 6th April 2015 at 16:36

No.10 my bus worsley mesnes , brings back so many memories

Comment by: RON HUNT on 6th April 2015 at 20:55

Ohhhh if only we could turn the clock back... This road was probably the first meeting point they had for many of today's married couples.

Comment by: Gary Winstanley on 6th April 2015 at 23:13

According to today's quantum physics, if you turned back the clock you might meet the wrong spouse.[but that can happen anyway i suppose]

Comment by: gideonfel on 7th April 2015 at 00:01

Whenever I see a photograph of Wigan as it was, I start to wonder about the people in the picture. Who was the woman walking towards the bus? Is she still alive? And the couple under the umbrella - were they coming from the Ritz? Married now with great-grandkids? Fanciful, I know!

Comment by: maggie on 7th April 2015 at 10:33

I used to catch the bus to Platt Bridge as well - coming from the High School. In the mornings when I arrived in this road, I used to wait for my friend on Woolworth's corner. I used to love going to the Ritz.

Comment by: Jarvo on 7th April 2015 at 11:28

1953? Much of the local estates were still in the process of being built then, Worsley Mesnes included. I think the two buses pictured were of the right aisle upper deck with the long seats red seats. They were always foggy with cig smoke that was so strong, it burned the back of your throat. Nasty habit on public transport now resigned to history where it belongs...Ugh...

Comment by: Maureen on 7th April 2015 at 11:47

Gideon,I do exactly the same as you..my mind runs riot with old photo's, I always wonder what happened to the people in every shot...I just love old shots like these.

Comment by: Jarvo on 8th April 2015 at 19:22

Farrie: As a kid you only sat downstairs on a bus when yer was wi yer mam...Daft bugger! Lol.

Comment by: irene roberts on 8th April 2015 at 21:19

The lady with her back to us to the right of the photo is wearing a plain coat and a headscarf, and is carrying a shopping-bag, and yet she has an elegance about her that is missing these days.

Comment by: Giovanni on 10th April 2015 at 09:57

Along this street would have been "au revoir" for most of my dates. Putting them on their last bus and me walking home!
How chivalrous was that!

Comment by: Rev David Long on 10th April 2015 at 18:21

If you'd have had any decency, Giovanni, you'd have chased the bus on your bike and would have seen your girl safely from her stop to her front door before pedalling back home.

Comment by: Maureen on 10th April 2015 at 18:26

Giovanni,it was very chivalrous of you..but why
did you have to walk home.

Comment by: irene roberts on 10th April 2015 at 19:08

Giovanni, you could have gone home via the canal with Maureen and me, but perhaps we'd better not go down that road again after all the trouble we caused on Photo-a-Day!

Comment by: aitch on 10th April 2015 at 19:41

There was a doorway on the left just out of shot were I used to meet my wife to be who worked in Woolies, I finished work at 4.30 while Alice finished at 6 so I had time to meet her and walk her to her bus for Orrell and have a chat and steal a kiss if we weren't going out that night, happy happy days.

Comment by: Maureen on 10th April 2015 at 20:33

Very true Irene, but we entertained a few members of WW members didn't we..lol.

Comment by: irene roberts on 10th April 2015 at 21:06

We certainly did, Maureen! Aitch, what lovely, precious memories; thankyou for sharing them with us.

Comment by: Giovanni on 11th April 2015 at 08:25

Good point Rev Long.
But try riding a bike whist eating steak pudding, chips and mushy peas and holding her portion!!

Comment by: Giovanni on 11th April 2015 at 08:36

Maureen
I'd missed my last bus on purpose just to steal some extra time with the girl. and anyway there was enough drunks to keep me company on my journey!
I can remember them...
"Giz a ciggie, pal!"... "Lends ten bob" ...."Is this the way to Ince?"
Irene
It would have been a pleasure to walk you and Maureen home along the canal and point out the Doges Palace, Bridge of Sighs and St Marks Square!! LOL

Comment by: Giovanni on 11th April 2015 at 10:37

Brilliant aitch. Very happy memories indeed. Now wheres Doc and his De Lorean? lol

Comment by: John on 12th April 2015 at 00:29

Comment by: Alan on 16th April 2015 at 20:49

I see Irene's finally admitted causing trouble on Photo a day with some of the clan. They don't half fancy them selves don't they.

Comment by: Maureen on 16th April 2015 at 22:32

Alan, have you always been negative love.

Comment by: Giovanni on 17th April 2015 at 08:55

Comment by: irene roberts on 17th April 2015 at 09:37

Hello Alan, my little ray of sunshine. Yes, we DID cause a stink, didn't we? And oh boy!, didn't we enjoy it?! Good morning, Maureen and Giovanni.

Comment by: Giovanni on 17th April 2015 at 10:30

Buongiorno Irene.

Comment by: Maureen on 17th April 2015 at 12:09

Good morning to you Irene and buongiorno to you Giovanni.

Comment by: Alex on 17th April 2015 at 20:07

Some people are so sad.

Comment by: Giovanni on 18th April 2015 at 08:28

Alex
Rejoin your Rag Tag Band! lol

Comment by: Alex on 18th April 2015 at 19:45

Yes sad really, it's not about this wonderful photo to some on here, it's all about them...they know who they are. I attend to agree with Alan.

Comment by: Giovanni on 19th April 2015 at 08:51

Alex, Alan and any other Tom, Dick and Gary.
If you want to take umbrage with me or my co-conspirators, I'm in the Brocket Arms every Friday night, usually arm wrestling!

Comment by: Maureen on 19th April 2015 at 12:58

Aren't there some right miserable people on here
lately..I bet their faces would crack if they dared to smile.
For your information,Irene contributes to the Wigan magazine 'Past Forward',Giovanni contributes
by keeping us all happy as Larry with his light hearted comments..I contribute by painting for one or two members of ww...what do you miserable lot contribute!!the three of us have always had nice comments to make on photo's on Album..we just can't help not being grumpy..I'm sure if Ron wanted to tell us off he would have done so by now..Wigan world is all about enjoying the site,so please feel free to join us...it costs nothing to be nice.

Comment by: irene roberts on 19th April 2015 at 17:10

Agreed, Maureen, and the thing that we got into trouble for on photo-a-day was adding comments that had nothing to do with the photo of Mowpin Lodge. Alan's comment regarding me on THIS thread had nothing whatsoever to do with a photo of a Wigan Corporation Bus in Station Road. It seems there is one rule for us and another for him; I thought he would at least have practised what he preaches.

Comment by: Garry on 19th April 2015 at 19:01

Nowt at all wrong with Maureen, Irene and Giovanni.

Comment by: irene roberts on 19th April 2015 at 20:15

Thankyou, Garry.

Comment by: Maureen on 19th April 2015 at 21:12

Thank you Garry.

Comment by: Alan on 20th April 2015 at 07:09

2 faced Gary.

Comment by: Giovanni on 20th April 2015 at 09:46

Thank you Garry lad for your support. The pics on WW invite comments not only about the pic but associated memories relating to it.
Thank you Ron for your tolerance and obvious understanding!
I, Irene and Maureen will continue to diverse before dementia robs us of our happy Wigan memories!

Comment by: John G on 28th April 2015 at 14:18

I agree Giovanni with those comments, yes it's important to get the subject matter right, but peoples involvement and I must point out sense of humour are a must on Wigan World. It injects life back into what used to be and let's other people around the World see how good and funny Wigan people can be.
