The extra line were part of Rylands sidings which served the local pits and Gidlow coal wash.

Many thanks Gordon. Your photos bring back memories. I was trainspotting at Whitley crossing in the seventies just after these great steam trains had disappeared. The extra lines had just been taken up and the new Spencer Rd bridge built.
