Nice to see this, travelled on the Abbey Lakes bus many many times.
When I traveled on it I'm sure it was No.7?
yes Ron, same route was 5 to Standish and 7 on its way to Abbey Lakes as I recall.
wasit number one to beech hill them three to Hindley.you could go by 3a to e ?.
In Wigan Corporation days it was route 5 one way, 7 the other. After Greater Manchester Transport took over the Corporation buses in 1974 most of the routes were re-numbered - this one to 629 obviously.
You can tell it's GMT days by the orange sticker with new fleet number on the radiator grill (Wigan always used a classic style in gold leaf for their vehicle numbers).
Answering baker boy, route 3 went to Hindley Castle Hill estate (Crossdale Road), 3A up Ladies Lane to Whiteside Avenue, just after Hindley Station & 3E up Belle Green Lane, terminating at Belle Green.
I remember only once travelling on a 3C which ran from Wigan to Hindley Bird i'th' Hand, but this bus was a real rarity!
In Wigan Corporation days buses ran from Beech Hill to Wigan and on to Ashton (alternate buses went into Ashton via Old Rd.) and visa versa. Hindley buses ran into Wigan and on to Martland Mill and visa versa.
Sorry English, but I have to interject here the 3b terminated just before the Station at a turnround specially made for the job and the 3e terminated at the top of windermere road adjacent to the flats one of our drivers lived in there and was always ready with a fresh brew for us, it was nearer than my home in Langdale I didnt mention that I drove for Greater Manchester transport
The bus did stop at Whiteside Avenue but needed 2 man crew as a reversal was needed. When buses went to one man operation, the terminus was moved to the turnaround facility built just before the station
I bought my dad a model of this Abbey Lakes bus off QVC years ago :)
