Ron,What a great photo, its where i was brought up .You can just see to the left what was the old Hand and Banner public house.Ithink it was pulled down around 1956/7 to make way for the new pub which is still there now.Have you any more photos of old Hindley that are rare.Graet work mate.
Colin, do you never go on the Memories of Hindley group on Facebook? It's great.
Colin your mistaken the roof behind the church is one of
the old houses in All Saints grove they are still standing
The hand and banner is still there ???
No way All Saints Grove was only built in 1955 and this photo is way before that. There were terraced houses in Banner street but they were more to the left of this angle and can't be seen.
Went to the exact spot where this photo was took. The houses "Wiganer" was on about cannot be seen from this position especially with the pub blocking the view. The 3 terraced houses 1,3,5,All Saints Grove were built around 1890 on ordinance survey maps it gives the address as 1,3,5,Chaple Fields, aka Wilde's Houses in some records.I hope this puts this confusion to bed .
Colin is absolutely right. The building in the background is the old Banner, which was knocked down around the late fifties. [I was there!] There's a good photo of the old Banner in [I think] the Walking Days section of the Album under All Saints. When it was knocked down they moved the new pub further back where the bowling green had been, and built the car park at the front. It's now just called "The Banner".
Just to confuse things even more, in the 1960's when I lived close to the church in one of the terraced houses mentioned above, my address was Banner Street, was the pub named after the street or the other way round?
Colin my auntie and uncle lived in all saints grove just behind the church there names were albert and Nellie French lost touch with my auntie many years ago think she went into sheltered accomadation, she was in the w.v at all saints church for many years
Hi Albert. I remember your aunty and uncle very well. They lived at 36 All Saints Grove; Colin Barnes lived at 32 and I lived at 28. We kids would play tick and pass in the Grove and when the ball went in your uncle's garden we'd panic! He'd come out and tell us off, but he always gave us our ball back! They were a lovely couple.
My great grandfather Daniel Astley Calderbank was the licensee in 1911 of the Hand and Banner. Seeking information on this person. Never spoken about in the family.
