A proper paper shop, can you imagine a cigarets or chewin gum machine out side shop today.

A chewing gum machine - remember when you put in your penny, turned the handle and if the arrow was pointing towards you (which it did every fourth one) you got two for the price of one.

I remember Beech Nut chewing gum dispensed from a machine and five Woodbine could be purchased in open top packs! I didnt smoke but came in handy for bartering at school! Especially with the girls (nudge, nudge, wink, wink)!! lol

Trust you, Giovanni! I love the Brooke Bond Tea adverts......they seemed to be on every shop-window in my childhood, and I have some original brown paper bags with the same advert on.

This really does bring back memories. Lived in Shevington from about 1953 to 1970 when I got married and moved to Springfield in Wigan. Remember Molly and her husband Tommy very well. Shop full of sweets and anything else. More than likely Tommy gave me my first haircut and then his on Jim Dandy. No delivery of newspapers during Wigan Holiday Weeks these were sold from a house across the road.

I remember Mrs Dandy with great affection from when I was a little boy in the early sixties. She use to come to my mother to get her hair done and would always bring me a white paper bag full of sweets and chocolate bars. A really lovely lady. She and her husband Tommy were our next door neighbours at the time. I also remember their daughter Barbara Dandy.

Loved Dandys me and my sister Sandra (Ambrose) used to get our Friday sweets there, Mrs Dandys brother 'Fairhurst' can't remember his first name used to deliver papers, his daughter Marjorie Fairhurst was my friend at school. Good old days.

Molly Dandy’s brother was Tommy Fairhurst

If I’m thinking correctly, Mollys brother Tommy would have been my grandad and Marjorie my auntie - did Marjorie have siblings?

I was a paper lad for Dandy's from 1971 until leaving School in 75. Mornings, evenings and some weekends. Fridays was the worst (Wigan Observer day) Sunday not much better with all the supplements.
I did Shevington top , up to the high School including all the estates like Lyndon Ave, Park Lane etc and Shevington Middle bit like manor road, old miles lane etc then on to new miles lane, again including the likes of the oval. Tommy Dandy did all round church lane, the council estate Gathurst Lane, His second round was Arbour lane. Never forget his flat cap and Hovis bike. Lovely people, Salt of the earth
