Taken about 1966, The old Abram Hall Farm can be seen in the trees.

The AMBUSH, a Leeds & Liverpool long boat (i.e. built to carry between Liverpool and Wigan - or beyond to Manchester and Runcorn - but not up the short locks of the Wigan flight towards Leeds). Still afloat - and still working alongside the dumb barge VIKTORIA, delivering coal and diesel to boats and canalised homes from their base at Crooke.

We used to spend hours on the land at the top side of that fence playing Football, Rugby, Cricket etc. could hear my Mum shout from way off when it was time to go in. Happy days.

Westwood power station to the left, but what's the other building with the tall chimney?

Comment by: Rev David Long on 1st February 2015 at 15:23

The nearer chimney may be at the glass works in Platt Bridge.

Empress Mill in Ince.

It could be the now demolished CWS glass works in Platt Bridge

I think that's a Barge and not a boat.

Comment by: Rev David Long on 1st February 2015 at 23:16

Yes, Garry - but all barges are boats, though not all boats are barges.
