Another "still" from the 1902 film, showing the gathering of so many people in Wigan's Market Place. Shops such as Liptons, Craddocks, J M Hall and Wallace can be seen but also the adverts mention Fred Karno's Comedians and the showing of King Edward Vll's coronation at the Public Hall.

Great photo. Noticeably all male again.

My Dad's side of the family lived in Wallgate from mid 1850's until the 1930's, just below Wallgate bridge - massive Irish families. I often wonder if any of them are in these crowds, probably! Unfortunately we have no family photos of my great Grandparents (for my Dad's side). My Grandfather would have been 4 when this was shot.

As John states, in the entry " Processional Parade". 1902, was a momentous year. Coronation of Edward V11, and the ending of the Boer War. Celebrations would be the order of the day, all over the country.

I was wrong about the all male comment. On closer examination there are 2 ladies almost in the centre of the photo, 1 wearing a headscarf the other to the right of her, wearing a hat.

Well spotted Aubrey but it still looks as if anything from 90%+ of the people are male which perhaps reinforces the social convention of those days.
