Wigan Parish Church 1902, probably on August 9th, Coronation day. It is likely this Church Service was the start of the celebrations but none of the women spilling out from the service appeared in the Mayoral Procession through the town. Ladies and girls with their elaborate headwear, men and boys with their Victorian/Edwardian dress and in the background some Policemen and to the left can be seen the helmet of a senior policeman who also carried a sword, a ceremonial one I assume.

Amen to what what Tom said seems to be an appropriate word for the photo. Brilliant.

Just look at their clothes and faces, makes you feel like you could just step into the crowd and be part of their day. Wonderful photos, Keith, thanks for sharing.

What a great pic of old Wigan. The rich section showing off in their finery, and there always has been rich people in and around Wigan. A common stereotype of Wigan is the opposite.

Pete, I completely agree, it was astonishing to me just how well dressed the populace were, as you say completely opposite to fixed and over simplified views.

Thank you Julie, the film from which this still was taken shows dozens if not hundreds of Wigan folk coming out of the Parish Church many of them Ladies and young girls, without exception they all looked incredible. The men and boys also were a credit to the town.
