Reverend Ernest John Baty (centre) was vicar of St. Mark's from 1956 to 1963. During his ministry he had clerical support from 3 curates - the Rev. Arthur R.B. Robinson(1958-1961), right in the picture, the Rev. D.B. Jones (1958-1960), left in the picture, and the Rev. Harold Sanderson (1961-1964),not in the picture.
Mr Robinson led the Young People's Fellowship and Youth Club, and was quite shy, with sermons usually lasting well under 5 minutes. Mr. Jones, on the other hand, was a Welshman, and had no difficulty in delivering long sermons!

Evelyn, Long before your wedding in 1961, there was an interesting incident at St. Mark's concerning a wedding in 1925. Margaret Montgomery (later Mrs Margaret Ferguson) arrived at St. Mark's church in her white dress and hat to be married at 2.30pm, only to find that there was no minister, as the Rev. Arthur Davey had forgotten all about it, and gone to a conference in Liverpool! On investigation it was discovered that the vicars of St. Matthew's Highfield and St. Paul's Goose Green had gone to the same conference. By this time it was 3pm, which was the closing time for weddings. So they all had to go home with no wedding. The wedding party had to return the following Thursday morning, when the couple finally got married, and a second reception was held.
