Fantastic set of photos, but only vague memories to me as I remember the area but didn't know it well. Look forward to comments from those who did. Just whereabouts was this taken? I'm sure old "Scholes" residents will be thrilled with these pics; I am fascinated by them and didn't even live there. Bring on the memories!
I think this is just below Greenough Street. I used to deliver orders on a pushbike with a basket on the front and back. I think it was from Melias as shown in the picture?
The shop on the corner is the temporary home of Scholes Post Office ,prior to that it was Ted Browns (Wilding's) gent outfitters and one time pawnshop , next door Rafferty's Fishmongers ,Mrs Rafferty is stood on the doorstep observing life. Much higher is The Rose and Crown (Dust Hole)
I worked at the Trustee Savings Bank next door to Melias around 1967. I vaguely remember a confectioners just up the road where we'd buy our lunches and also we'd go to a chippy down Greenough Street. It's lovely to see these old photos of Scholes.
Margaret ,the confectioners you mention was Alkers .
I pressed the wrong button.... I'm Margaret Wall of course (not Wakk).
Thanks for that information Tom, I think I remember it was Alkers. Our branch manager at the time was Tom McCreery, a very nice and courteous gent.
Maggie Lewis, and her sister, had a butcher's shop opposite Melias. When on Scholes beat you could always get a brew off Maggie
Was not Melias a grocery store, I seem to remember one or two, but living in Ince, I cant recall any there, we had Mortons and at one time Rushtons
Margaret Wall - do you know anything more about Tom McCreery, I had an uncle with that name and I wonder if it was him. We lived in Bircket Bank.
Maggie the Tom McCreery who was our bank manager at Scholes branch, used to live in Whitley Crescent, off Spencer Road. I'm afraid I can't tell you much more than that , as it is many years since I've seen or heard of him.
aitch, melias was a grocery store. I seem to remember they had another branch in the old Market Hall. My wife is a Leyther and tells me Melias also had a branch in Leigh,
Between the post office and white car, these days we have the lovely 'Scholeshenge'! A brilliant testament to the way we lived here years gone by; I think not!!!!!
There was also a fish shop inbetween Melias and Ted Browns -(post office later)It was Ramsdales or Ramsdens. I think the lady is stood in the doorway. She always dressed in white overalls and thick black stockings wiht clogs. She had a couple of cats as well which wandered about all over the place.
