Here is the old Asda taken in 1997 just before it closed to be replaced by the new store visible in the background. The new car park is now where the old store was and the new Saddle roundabout is now where the car park was !

I seem to recall that the new Asda store opened on the day of the Princes of Wales's funeral, am I right?

Yes you are right aw ,the store was closed until after the funeral,
before Asda was built there used to be a jam works there my wife cleaned at Asda upstairs and often smelled the ghost making jam
My mums family (Fairbrother)lived in Douglas Street and both my Grandma and Great-Grandma worked at the jam works.
