From Central Station the (WARS) tour hauled by Stanier Mogul 42968. (top left) just leaving Lower Ince station with serveral brake vans. In the background is the Springs Branch line into Ince wagon works, and the steel girder bridge that carried the Pemberton loop line. (Top right) Mogul 42968 uncoupled from its special running round at Central station.(Bottom left) again seen this time on the Whelley loop line at Ince heading towards De-Trafford junction. (Bottom right) again seen next to the Whelley junction signal box. A great day out.

The top left photo, the line is almost dead. What the meaning of WARS?

The Stanier Mogul fund was established in 1970, 42968 is preserved at Severn Valley Railway.

I started work at Springs Branch on the 4/7/1966 as an engine cleaner.
I remember cleaning this engine for the brake van tour.We used paraffin soaked rags to clean the surface. We then covered the cleaned bits with T-oil(Thicker oil) to put a bit of a shine on. We also used sand as an abrasive to clean the lining and numbers on the cab side and frame.I remember a chap painting the smokebox number plate for the occasion. Some of the (WARS) came to have a look over the shed wall on the 12th of August to see if we had done a good job.No-one complained as far as I know! (Happy days)
It's nice to know the engine is still around and still carries the 8F shed-plate on the smokebox.

Garry; Just look under the title above the photo. You musn`t study the details before you jump in with bosh feet. You do it time and time again.

Great set of photos Colin, particularly the top left; never seen a shot of the GCR bridge from that side - last time I walked around there, that particular section is now completely flooded & looks like a canal. I wonder if anyone on that trip is still around & has any more photos?

Did you say it was a Wigan based society?
