I'm a bit confused Karen
How can this be ince wagon works with pemberton loop line bridge in the background
Ince isn't in pemberton

It is the Wigan avoiding line nicknamed the Pemberton loop line and this is the Ince Wagon work the photo belongs to my other half :-)

The Pemberton loop line of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway went from Pemberton through Ince to Hindley. It merged with the line from Wigan Wallgate near to Amberswood and onwards to Manchester.

My cousin Jack worked here I believe. Does this line run through Spring View - near the Police Station?

Comment by: Albert. on 27th October 2013 at 15:30

Maggie. This was the line that ran past St Mary's School, Lower Ince, and carried on passing Ince Park, on the Hindley side of the park.

Great photo Karen, I remember this steel girder bridge from Hindley to Pemberton. As you say the Wigan avoiding lines, the line closed in 1969 and lifted in 1971.

Comment by: josie on 27th October 2013 at 23:22

is this the iron bridge in Hindley ?

Comment by: Colin Harlow on 1st November 2013 at 13:40

The two engines await their fate, the one nearest the camera is a Pannier tank and a Fairburn 2-6-2 T (I think).
Many engines and rolling stock like these were scrapped and cut up at Central Wagon works up to the end of steam in 1968. Thanks again Karen.

just to the left under the iron bridge was were the ince wagon works was situated' I cut many coaches and wagons up on that site as well as a couple of locos; this was also the site of the wagon repair shop and the wigan central to Manchester central ran just a bit further up but when under the line being used

That was one substantial bridge & looked almost exactly like a sister design to the one that formerly spanned the slow lines at Brindle Heath Junction, near Agecroft (Salford).

They were certainly built around the same time (1880s?).
& Probably by the same contractor for the L&Y Railway.
