Lovely picture Ann....I remember those horses in parks when I was a kid over there....cheers!!
King Georges playing fields, I've been on that rocking horse a few times in the 1950's.
I've been gone too long, I'm forgetting names of places.. Kenee is that the park / field behind what was the 'British School'?
Yes thats the one Janet. Ann is this Paul? x
It is Paul. This is a great site for going back down memory Lane.
Thanks Karen, been at least 55 yrs since I was last back there..
Janet: I bet you didn't know my other name was Karen !!!
I used to go to the British School. They used the playing field for sports and netball - and the pitch for football - and sports day of course.
Your right Kenee, I didn't know, lol....
I'm from Downall Green, so didn't go on that field much... I'm going back 40/50 years, but when the Ashton Carnival was finished, didn't they always end on that field..
The Carnival did used to finish at the playing field in the 1950's and 1960's. Later on, for some reason they changed the venue to Cromptons Recreation ground in Warrington Road. It may have been a sponsorship thing allowing participants to make use of the clubhouse. Later still, I think in the 1980's, when the recreation ground went, they changed again to Ashton market square.
Yes, I thought so, it was in the 50s 60s I was thinking of.. I came over here in 75...
I've been on this park loads of times , great memories !! and I used to love Ashton carnival
I believe this is the park my brother and I played in behind my aunt Nellie's home on Old Wigan Road - they lived just west of the school. Played many hours there when visiting from Essex (My Dad was in the US Air Force at Wethersfield) ... thanks for sharing the photo.
