With three carriages, this is probably a Liverpool Exchange to Wigan stopping train. It looks as if it may be entering the bay platform at very slow speed. Happy days. We would catch this from Pemberton to go spotting 'down't nick'.

Further investigation tells me that it hasn't entered the bay, but has proceeded on to the up platform which could indicate a Manchester, Bolton or Rochdale train.

EASY ONE THIS, Southport to Manchester line. If it was Liverpool to Manchester, it would have taken the Pemberton line.

Garry: How do you come to that conclusion? The Pemberton line didn't always go the bay platform...A Southport train would have had more carriages in 1965; Southport was still a very busy terminal in those days.

only the liverpool exchange to west yorkshire or newcastle expresses used the pemb loop line,not for local traffic passenger wise,huge amount of freight used the pemb loop line.the pemb loop line was built specifically for the manchester to liverpool exchange flyers

from my recollection the bay was only used for wallgate to exchange stoppers.

Baker Boy and Garry. I think you are getting mixed up with the Pemberton Loop Line that ran from Pemberton Junction in the west, to Hindley No3 Junction in the east. The other line ran from Pemberton to Wigan Wallgate via Newtown and Alexandra Park.

No no no Javo, i'm talking pemberton, westward park and Hindley. Most trains on branch lines at that time only pulled two or three coaches.

Garry: The photograph has got nothing to do with the Pemberton Loop Line; it is irrelevant here. This loco is entering Wallgate from the west. Whether it is a Liverpool or Southport train is the question at hand. In my opinion, it is a Liverpool train that has come from Pemberton via the normal route...It certainly hasn't used the Loop: that is impossible!

its very late in the day for steam to be operating any local passenger trains,my previous post said only expresses from exchange used the loop line (pemb).my guess his the dmu probably has failed and subbed by steam.this loco his deff going into the bay.

Lets get this straight. This train is entering the platform line. The line to the right was a through road to allow traffic to pass through the area whilst a train was standing in the platform
