Have no idea of the date.....may be late 60s at a bad guess.
A lot of toffs wi nowt better, t, do!
OSCAR WILDE....
'The unspeakable chasing the inedible' How true!!!!!
Anyone found killing foxes should be made to spend a long time in prison.
Foxes: not legal now; but we are keeping the resources to hunt down ...[I had better self-sensor that bit, or it will not get included.]
Anyone killing foxes should spend a long time in prison? Tell that to the parents of the baby who had its finger bitten off by a fox that got in the house.
I agree with you all......I just love this picture for the horses....never went hunting on horseback.....always looked too dangerous.....
Spot on Liz, mid to late 60s. Every week (from 1966) the Wigan Oberver printed a half page photo in colour on the front and back page. The Wigan Observer then at Woods St, were pioneers in web offset and colour printing from 1966.
Many thanks Liz.
Bonzo....Where was the mother of the baby & what door was open in one of the coldest winters we have had for a good while to let a fox get in to the house ?
Thanks Colin.....I think it is a magnificent picture for the horses as I love horses. The big one that Bob is on I was fortunate to exercise him when he was a little lame.....me being all of 10 at the time and Bob being a friend of my Dads.......:-)
Lizzie, you say that Bob Silcock has a bowler hat. If he`s the chap on the extreme right, he`s wearing a top hat.
We used to see a hunt on Chorley Golf Course many years ago.
I wasn't sure Ernest so I went with bowler.....I knew someone would set me right.....thank you....cheers!!!
That horse Bob is on measured a big 17 hands. I know 'cos he once asked me to give him a leg-up. Very near broke me back...Bob was a "very" big man. ;o)
Thomas Wall founded the Wigan Observer in 1853, it was family run for 113 years. In 1965, the company was taken over by United Newspapers, but the then new Woods street works and new web offset printing press was put-in-hand in 1960. The then new Wigan Observer printed by web offset rolled off the presses on 28th January 1966, colour photos appeared on the 24th August 1966. The Wigan Observer was only the 3rd in the country to use this printing process then a revolution in newspaper production and it was a success.
Bonzo, plenty domestic animals are capable of injuring a baby, pet dogs for example, there has been many unfortunate cases over the last few years.
Urban Foxes are vicious vermin and as such should be culled,in my opinion!
The Holcombe hounds are harriers ie they used to hunt hares.
More infants are harmed by other humans who should know better, than by WILD animals. If there is a need for a cull the task of culling should never be given to someone who gets enjoyment out of killing!
A lot of people should be culled..they're supposed to be the brainier species..leave the animals alone.
Notice the old Phone Box , just in front of the most distant rider in black . This picture captures the Phone Box on Robin Hood Lane , before it was moved to the right of the Post Office on Hall Lane .... an absolute life line in those days , when not many families had phones in their homes !
Also , the long gone road sign saying Robin Hood Lane can be seen behind the old phone box . There is no road sign at all for Robin Hood Lane to be found today , that's progress for you ! Back to the Phone Box , it's old four diget telephone number used to be Appley Bridge 2527 .
