Ruston, with train, manrider at the front, heads toward Gathurst exchange sidings. (2ft gauge.) Summer 1978.

the train used to be driven by joe rigby he also had a barbers shop at kitt green opposite the brookhouse

I was once told that this is what George Orwell was referring to when came up with the phrase Wigan Pier, nothing to do with the tippler on the canal at Seven Stars.

No Horace, the original Wigan pier was a similar looking wooden trestle structure leading from Meadows Colliery (frog lane refuse tip) to Newtown (Asda) over the old L&Y railway...
