Are you sure it's 1968 I was told our house was built in 1966 and it isn't on the photograph. Can you send me a large scan of the photo? Thanks
The gantry passes over the canal and The Dougie.Anyone know what it carried? Very interesting photo Stewart.
This photo is later than 1968 as the lodge on the other side of the railway appears to have been filled in, which happened much later.
I can see two lodges not filled in at bottom right. The bridge is th old Martland Bridge. No sign of the new road through to Beech Hill. When did this appear? The layout between the Douglas and the canal looks like the caravan site before any caravans.
I think the large pond is still there on google Earth.
Dave, there appears to be parch marks in the field from the gantry over the Douglas to the buildings on Martland Mill Lane. It could be a sewage pipe. If you type "Dumbarton Green, Wigan" into Google maps and put the "little man" at the junction of "Navigation Bank" and Woodhouse Lane, you can see a pipe going over the Canal.
Ron your house wasn't built in 1968, ours was completed in March 1969, that's when we moved in, this pic is about right most probablly early in the year.
Dave
The canal and river crossing is on what was the mineral line from the Orrell colliery which was on Walthew House lane.
Thanks for the info Keith and Neil.I spent a lot of time down The Cut in the fifties.
The photograph was took on the 28th May 1968.
Isn't the gantry carrying a water pipe to the Heinz factory?
First maisonettes were Withnall House, Scholes. They were built in 1966. Years later, I lived in the same block. A big fire in same block, 1991 saw the demise of same. Following the fire, and the condemnation of same, they were all demolished!!!! I loved that maisonette
Another blast from the past, i recall in the late 60,s there was another lodge to the north of the railway line which looks like its been filled in on this pic. Also i remember what i think was an old 2nd world war concrete pill box which was close to the canal on the waste ground mid way between Martland Mill bridge and the Locks.
The gantry over the canal is Maryland mill bridge which was part of the old road from beech hill to marsh green.
