Fabulous photograph showing the "twenty steps"...This brings back so many memories of my childhood. What a massive concern Blundells must have been...Marvellous stuff.
Is that the Railway Pub in the background.
Brought back memories for me as well, Jarvo. I went to St Matthews last week and drove by here a few times. How the area has changed... and so much traffic!
twenty steps fippin ek.... its great seeing these photos...spent many a happy hour over the tips and sliding down the slag heaps...
I know a lot of people lost their jobs because of Maggie Thatcher but the pits closing have cleaned up Wigan & outlying districs,
I climbed over Twenty Steps every day on my way to Highfield Primary school from my home in Queen pit cottages in the 1950s.My grandad was a driver on one of the trains that are in the photo. What memories!
Ged. I concur with your sentiments. Remember the horrible smogs of the fifties, and sixties. The poison in them must have caused havoc with peoples' health.
