I remember some of those artistes from the 1970s. There used to be a magazine called "Scene" with information on about which artistes were appearing in which club.

A club mag called WOW (What's On Wigan) is doing this job... did it replace 'Scene'

No idea, Bill. "Scene" was written by a man named Cliff Gerrard who was from St. Helens. He was a very talented writer who wrote regular humorous articles in "Scene" about Labour Clubs and their clentele which were eventually made into a booklet called "Mild and Bitter", of which I have a (much-battered!) copy. He was also a talented poet, and an extremely moving poem of his, "To Sarah", (an old man talking to his deceased wife), was once read out on Coronation Street by the character Albert Tatlock. I used to work at Bickershaw Labour Club when a friend of mine was Stewardess and the bar-staff appeared in "Scene"......fame at last!

Johnny Meadows, at the bottom of the programme - didn't he sing Mario Lanza's songs?

Comment by: irene roberts on 7th December 2012 at 15:32

Yes, I think he did. He later ran "The Queens" pub at Bickershaw until a few years ago.
