Demolition of the old market hall goes on whilst the new one looks on.

I loved the old market... loved the smell of the Flower,Fruit and Veggies stalls as you walked past..Loved the atmosphere of the place... still using a teapot I bought in there, can't remember how many years ago...

The old market was full of vermin and would have cost too much to save. The Galleries is fantastic. I'm in my late 60s but I really do feel that modern Wigan is superb.

I'm sorry, I have to disagree. There's nothing superb about Wigan town centre any more. Empty units in new buildings, stall holders either having to charge over the odds or go out of business, because the rents are so steep because the council has to get the money from somewhere to pay for all the new building that nobody wants to rent. All the character being pulled down instead of saved. Chester is a town full of history and I'm sure its had its vermin, but they manage to keep it going successfully. The problem with our town is that many councillors have no pride in our town, and aren't satisfied unless they're changing things, often without thought, planning, or actually asking the tax payer what they want the money spent on. Has anyone see the new logo for Wigan? A green Heart! I wonder how many thousands were spent to think that one up and replace all the stationery and envelopes, business cards for all the employees and so forth? It looks like a cheap dating agency letterhead. No. I'm afraid you're wrong. There is nothing superb about my dear old town now.
