Another photograph taken by Lawrence Isherwood.Dated 1960. No doubt this old lady was a model for a future painting. Can anyone recognise her? .
Photograph belongs to Marguerite Isherwood.

Brilliant! Wouldn't the lady be amazed to know we were all looking at this?

A brilliant photo Ron and Marguerite. Wouldn't it be nice if someone could name her for her descendant relatives.

This photo made me cry, thinking about what a hard life she must have lived. Compared to so many today, who get everything given to them and have never done a hard days work in their lives...Still, a brilliant photo, I love seeing such as this...God Bless her little old soul....

My Grandma wore clogs during the week..but her best shoes on Sunday.

Maureen My grandma and all her mates wore clogs and shawl in Melbourne St but they always had a black coat and black boots for funerals. I can see her now in that coat and boots. I don't know what they wore for weddings.

In 1881 my Grt.Grandparents lived at 44. Pity we can't see a bit more of the lane.

I would like to guess she wasn't as old as we would think?

Hi Vicky, that sounds like the same person. My grandfather was Christoper Walls from Victoria Rd Platt Bridge, his father was also called Christopher who married Rebecca Tymon. They both lived on Boyswell Lane. It seems like we could be related!

an elderly lady from that area said it could be Kitty Moran..does that ring any bells with anyone?

Comment by: Debbie Gaynor on 11th February 2014 at 15:52

Hi Vicky, I actually went to Wigan reg office and bought a copy of this. I then popped to have a look at St Georges Church as I hadn't seen it before, but it was closed. Thank you ever so much for the info. x

I have the painting that James Lawrence Isherwood painted from this picture. The lady on the photograph is in the exact position on the corner of the street and has the same clothes on as she does in my painting.
The painting can be viewed on the art by isherwood website (figures section page 11 3rd from left title shawl boyswell lane).

My ggg-grandparents lived on Boyswell Lane in 1851/52. During the 1851 census there are 11 people residing at the address, 7 immediate family, then a lodger, a visitor & 2 grandchildren with age range from 4-60 years old, with occupations from house keeper, cotton spinners, coalminers & 2 children aged 4 & 5 years old. The houses don't look big enough to accommodate so many people but assume they have attics that were utilised.
