Another view of the old Coach House which stood on the corner of St. Paul's Avenue, and was just in front of St Margarete's Home. Which stood on the site of what is now the Ancliff Nursing Home

Ron,
I can't thank you enough for these two pictures of the coach house. I was brought up in St Paul's ave, and remember the building very well. It is amazing to see it once more. If you have any other pictures of the area I would be delighted to see them.
Thanks again, John

Ron. I also meant to ask: Any chance you could tell me where you got these pic's from ?

Comment by: Ann A on 14th September 2012 at 21:55

My dad took the photos just before the coach house was demolished I think that was about the early 60`s.

I remember my late Mother mentioning this building, she used to pass it every day going to work at Colliery Explosives, (Jordans) many years ago.

Ann A - Just wondering if you have any more pictures of this area that you could put on the site ?

Awesome never thought I would ever see this view again brought back so many memories ... like John I was brought up in the area scrumping pears from St Margarets home .. getting caught out and having to face bobby Crogan ... happy simple days of childhood ...thank-you so much for posting it's made my day ..

Comment by: mw on 15th September 2012 at 13:17

remember it well ,me to Sandra used to pinch the apples from st margarets home , bobby crogan caught us a few times going down the coach road going back home to worsley mesnes ,just brings back so many memories....ps are you the sandra webster that used to work in Scope charity shop ?

Comment by: dave c on 15th September 2012 at 13:58

Moved to Worsley Mesnes in 1956, but can't recall this building being there then.Probably went round with my eyes shut in those days. As for the apple scrumpping, we were also chased by a local Bobby and ran over the timber decked bridge which ran over the Yellow Brook at the back of the Orchard. Whether we were too fast for him,or if he thought the rotting timbers wouldn't hold his weight, I'm not sure, but we scarppered over the old railway embankment and legged it down the other side, heading for the Tippings Arms. From there it was a doddle to wander back up the old coach road and blend in with the other kids on the Rec when he came looking for us. Didn't the Houses on St Pauls Avenue, opposite the Church used to be Police Houses ?
Happy Days indeed. An ex-Burns Closer.

Yes Dave they were police houses , i think bobby Crogen lived in one of them,we were scared to death of him, he used to go mad at us if e we riding two on a bike down the coach road.....how petty was that !!!!

Comment by: John Brown on 15th September 2012 at 15:48

Hi Sandra. No wonder there were never any pears left for us lads. I wondered where they all were (har har)

Comment by: Albert. on 15th September 2012 at 16:36

Yes Dave C, there were two police houses situated where you mention. Jimmy Crogan lived in one of them, Frank Leigh, lived in the other one. Was this coach house opposite Eckersley's Vinegar Works? For the life of me, I cannot remember it.

Yes mw I did work for Scope on Wallgate !!! Who are you ? and Dave the police houses where opposite the Church one for Bobby Crogan and one for Bobby Lee ... if you were scrumping apples you must have been at the white cottage which was just behind the Black Bull ... you could get at it through the graveyard and over the yellow brook .. done that a time a two aswell ha ha and played dodge with the trains on the railway line ... we had so much freedom to roam and play and never came a cropper just the occasional scab on the knees or elbows ..

Thank you Sandra. I lived in one of the police houses along Warrington Road, a little further on than Kay's butchers. The majority of the time, I always worked from the Pemberton Office. I lived there when all the graves were dug up,in the little cemetary, for the major redevelopment of Clapgate Lane. I left in 1964.

Remember the old building and the orchards well.I must have been a lot slower than you guys, old Josh dickinson caught me in the orchard, he knocked seven bells out of Me. Josh had never heard of human rights. Hate Apples to this day.in later years we had a good laugh over a pint in the Ben Jonson about it

I well remember all Alan Wink has wrote. Like him I lived in Walpole Ave 54-72. We all had our hair cut at that barbers shop - short back and sides ! I used to deliver papers round the estate working for 'little Jackie' He got his papers from that paper shop on Warrington road. I vaguely remember the building on the corner.
