I took this photo in the evening on the bottom field near the River Douglas, it is looking over towards Widdrington Road, Monument Park, off Wigan Lane. The football area was flat and clear of any trees, today the whole valley seems to covered with woodland. The players, left to right are: Brian Banks, at the back is Kevin Fitzpatrick, Jimmy Smith, Michael Fitzpartick and nearest the camera is Jackie Tomlinson. Happy days.

Would this be the old whiteheads ,St Mary,s old ground

Hi bil7, no it's not the old St Mary's Ground, it was situated below the tree-lined walk into the Plantations, to the right of the flight of steps down from Bottling Wood.
Great 'pic ! Brian Banks is my cousin, he is a great lad, he was DEADLY with his Catapult, Relum Tornado and BSA Airsporter, he still lives in Whelley as does Jackie Tomlinson. Kevin and Michael Fitzpatrick sadly are no longer here.
Phillip Harrison was always a clever lad !
