Glad that photographs don't record the aromas of the time, the river stank to high heaven at that time with raw sewage and all sorts of pollution emptying into it, and those gents urinals along there also stank too. Ughh

The smells were as you say, but all part of that era. Thankfully the Duggie has been cleaned up and the awful loos demolished long ago. Spent many happy times at Central Park watching the greats. Living in Scholes I remember being swept up Greenough St by the throng of fans many in flat caps and scarves smoking their heads off, stretching all across the road with all traffic movement impossible. Folk standing on their doorstep enquiring about the result. Great days those were.
