I agree with Ron ,this is a fascinating pihotogragh ,I got my magnifing glass
on the job .Ron I can't make out if the spire of St Thomas 's church was built seperately ? ,have you any information on that,St, Joseph's can also be seen clearly, what a pity it's in such a sorry state today.

There are a few photos around the town centre, all from the same shoot.
For those of you not familiar with the site you will find it here:

Just type "Wigan" in the search box. They are adding to it all the time, but as yet there are no ne of Springfield Park or the Tesco car park

Great photo, my old school St Josephs is clearly visible.Never knew that there used to be houses so close to what i remember being the back of the school where the dinner canteens used to be.

looks as if trencherfield mill is in the process of being built?

Nice photo Bob, you can just make out the trams trundling up and down Wallgate. I can see the three railway stations in full working order and whats now known as Woods street at the bottom of the photo not yet developed.

Betty, I think the roof and curved parapets of the mill can be seen in the bottom left corner. Trencherfield was built in 1908

Aerial pic of Trencherfield Mill also taken in 1920 (possibly on same flight) can be found here: http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/image/epw005021

What a great shot this is. One of the best I've ever seen. I can clearly see Coops, the town hall, Cenral Park, gas showrooms etc I can even see the area where I was brought up. Fantastic photograph.

You can see the old "Iron Bridge" from King St to North West station. Cracking photo.

Where is all the SMOKE? Any ideas?

I am sure I can see you waving,Rolo. If you look closely there really is snow on the ground.Looks like The Big Man himself put a special layer around St.Thomas's.

Comment by: Bob on 31st July 2012 at 20:23

Don't think there was any snow lads. It was taken in August

I have seen this site before, there are some great shots, but not been on for ages. My gt gt gt grandparents lived in various houses in Adelaide / Melbourne St - plus later generations - my Dad was born in the same street! It was roughly where 'Go Outdoors'is. Great clear photos
