I wonder if any of the people who collect rail tickets can date it from those prices?

I used to get a monthly ticket Wigan Wallgate to Manchester Victoria for 16 shillings,AP,back in 1958.I worked 6 and a half days so that came out at about a sixpence a day.

In the late 50s, you could, on a Saturday evening purchase a ticket (return) to Blackpool for three and a tanner. (Wigan, North West). This ticket would also get you into the Tower Ballroom. They referred to the train,as the passion wagon. It returned to Wigan at midnight. It was always packed.

And a penny cheaper than the price of ticket to Southport as pictured: There's competition!

I thought that the belisha beacon would have given us a clue, The first Belisha Beacon was erected in Wigan on the corner of Mesnes Street, and became operational on July 4, 1935. It was the first in this country to be erected.

Does anyone know when the sign was changed to, as is shown? On the earlier photographs of the station, on the site it is shown as
LANCASHIRE and YORKSHIRE RAILWAY?????

The L&YR amalgamated with the London and North Western Railway on 1 January 1922, prior to the 1923 Grouping, which then placed them in the LMS Group. However , sinage may have changed considerably after the ownership changes, as in other photo (50s or 6os, tho LMS ceased in 1948)

It still appears as Lancashire and Yorkshire on the photo, which is claimed to be from the Thirties, on the thread 'Wigan Slide Show', which is on the 'General' Board on this site.

Zebra crossings replaced belisha beacons, in 1951,so the photograph is pre 1951

I think the LMS sign was still there in the 70s.

The style of the lady's dress appears to be from the 1930's and this also links to the LMS wording.
