didnt this end up as sweaty betties? or am i wrong/
Had my first Prawn Curry there (1965). Not bad, but beaten hands down by the Tory club across the road (Commercial Yard)
The Sweaty Betty's I knew was on Darlington Street.
Betty's husband Ronnie owned the Happy Palace for quite a while Broady.
this was the first chinese in Wigan, we would be there every Saturday night after a night in the club. One night we had to go into basement as no other seats left, the area was littered with mice droppings and was closed for a time while a clean up was carried out
Was it called something else at first??/ (Pacific Ocean or something?)
No the pacific ocean was further down near the gas showrooms.the pacific ocean didnt close untill about 1995?
Shacklady's (fishmonger) had a fish restaurant near here at one time. 70s and 80s as far as I recall.
betty this was indeed to become Sweaty Betties, later. Spent many a late evening in there.
Brian Shacklady had a fish and chip shop close to the Pacific Ocean restaurant in 1975/1976. The premises were taken over in 1977 by the Adjeer Manzil Indian restaurant.
Thanks for that Betty, I remember it now. I had my works leaving 'do' at the Pacific Ocean.
Brian Shacklady who was a mate of mine from SLG , never had a fish & chip shop, but took over Tom Whalleys wet fish shop, opposite the NatWest Market Bank in Woodcock St. after marrying Toms daughter. The furniture shop on the parade opposite the old St Andrews Labour Club (now farm foods) BS furnishings, was opened by him (probably run by his son now)
I think you will find that the Happy Palace building was always a chinese and Sweaty Betty's was next door going down which later became Ajmeer Manzil.
John - the Happy Palace closed and became the Delhi restaurant (Sweaty Betty's) circa 1980. It remained the Delhi until circa 1984, when they moved to the corner of Upper Dicconson St/Dicconson St for a short while.
The Adjeer Manzil restaurant opened in 1977, in premises further down Market St, only a couple of doors up from Battye's corner, and close to the Pacific Ocean.
The shop occupied by the Adjeer Manzil had previously (1975/1976) been occupied by a fish and chip cafe/snackbar owned by Brian Shacklady.
I can speak with some degree of certainty re the above, as my work in the mid/late 1970s took me into all these premises, and I regularly had to prepare paperwork relating to them, containing full postal addresses/proprietors etc.
Correction to the above - 'Sweaty Betty's ' moved to the corner of Upper Dicconson St/Dicconson Terrace, into what had been Crocker's restaurant, and later became Gems.
The Ajmeer Manzil can be seen in this photo, on the extreme right - http://www.wiganworld.co.uk/album/photo.php?opt=5&id=1375&gallery=Market+Street%2C+Wigan&offset=0
I thought Tom Whalley had a pet shop / dried goods store, not a wet fish shop.
But no doubt others know best, he added with characteristic modesty.
Is the Azmer Manzil still open? What happened to shundabun in hallgate that was a top place.Best curry house in wigan? I reckon Cinnamon in standish.
It closed down some years ago, Betty.
Now a fish and chip shop/cafe again, I believe.
betty and ronnie did indeed move to the happy palace after the closure of their premises in Darlington st .it was called The New Dehli ,used to go in there quite a lot,so much in fact that we could "strap" our bill till the following week!!
That bus, also is lovely and clean and shiny isn't it?
Next to it, is that one of those, once commonplace, temporary bus stops, which were constructed utilizing an old bus wheel hub as the pedestal/base of the sign?
Betty, Ajmeer Manzil closed, I believe the owner 'absconded'. Shundabon closed fairly recently I think. One of the partners at Ajmeer opened the Taste of Bengal in Standish, and later opened the Spice Lounge in Wigan. And I agree - Cinnamon in Standish is excellent - I as there last night!
The Ajmeer Manzil occupied the chip shop which was the original JJ Bradburns sports shop prior to Dave Wealan taking over and starting JJB empire
JJ Bradburn: (Upper floor) What memories that evokes - Summer Camping kit bought from there if you could afford good quality: otherwise twur from t various Army Surplus Outlets, or Kays.
Anyone remember JJ Bradburn's model railway exhibitions that they put on in the Drill Hall, Powell Street?
Mick,
I stand corrected, got my bearings and facts totally wrong.
surely tom w had pets fish up near john bull horse training owned big black cat 60s
Art,Brian Shacklady,s father in law was Richard Whalley my mother in law,s brother.
Brian Shacklady did in fact marry Gertrude Whalley, but she was NOT Tom Whalley's daughter. Her uncle lived close to me & his name was Les Gleaves.
I know for a fact that Brian Shacklady worked down Giants Hall Colliery, & when he got serious with Gertrude, her dad told him to go & get his National Service done, 'cos he was in line to take the shop over when they married...He joined the RAF
Hi do any of you remember a staff member of this restaurant by the name of 'Maxime' ? He may have been a manager there in the late '60s. I'm trying to trace him or any of the staff who worked there around that time as they may be able to help with my search.
Brian was my dads cousin, he applied for planning for a chippy but was knocked back, then it became a chinky.he also had upstairs downstairs on wallgate and later the place on woodhouse lane with his son christopher, he was perhaps best known as a fishmonger, he also worked in the mines and was a good rugby union player
Does anyone recall the name of the Indian restaurant in Market Street before Azmir Manzil. It may have been up some stairs. Thanks
It was called the Golden Chick.
It was indeed upstairs as the downstairs was a cafe.
