Would the spire belong to St Thomas's Church?

Comment by: Mick on 2nd April 2012 at 14:00

I remember St Thomas's being demolished, am I right in thinking the parish is combined with St James now?

Thought the pub at the end of Queen Street was the Wheatsheaf.

Comment by: Roy on 3rd April 2012 at 01:52

The pub on the corner of Queen St and Wallgate was the Wheatsheaf, wasn,t Norman Cherrington the landlord at some time?

Comment by: Loz on 3rd April 2012 at 15:14

Don't remember Norman Cherrington, but when us lads used to go in, the landlord was Brian Fairhurst who was a rugby player and universally known as 'Giant'. Nice atmosphere in the pub - piano and singing on Friday nights, nice bunch of old Wallgaters. 'Giant' once bet he could sup a pint faster than me - and he lost and was most upset!

Whereabouts would this photo have been taken from? I can't work it out. If thats St Thomas's church in the background surely that can't be Queen Street in the foreground (where the car is)or can it?

Comment by: Loz on 9th April 2012 at 13:09

Mr Granada, St Thomas's church was off Caroline Street so would be visible from the station, with Queen Street in between.

So would that row of houses be part of Faggy Lane?

Comment by: Hamish Lancaster on 3rd May 2016 at 01:13

The picture is obviously taken from the platform of Wigan North Western Station overlooking Queen Street. The old row of houses would have been in Princess Street, which is still there. Faggy Lane is to the left of the picture not visible on here and so is Ironmonger Lane (now known as Hartley Terrace) which crosses onto both sides of the road on Queen Street.
