Photograph taken from the top of the Market Place looking down Market street. The old Black Horse pub on the left. Any other town would have kept this historic old pub but Wigan Council decided to demolish it and put up a new nondescript building in its place...

Wigan Council have done a lot of things over this past 30 years they should be ashamed of....

People use the term "council" like their a different entity, they're just people voted in to positions on behalf of us. Unfortunately they know how the ballot box will go and feel free to experiment with whatever they wish.

Have to agree that the council have ruined the town, but surely the old Black Horse pub building is still standing, although sadly no longer a pub?

I worked at at lowe's from 1960-1963. It lost it's way after it was takenover by Geenwoods in 1963. Looking down Market St., the next shop was Nora Webster hairdressers, then The U.C.P.(United Cattle Products) on the corner of Hallgate was.Howards pram shop.

Was there an alleyway between the Black Horse and Lowes and is it still there?

Comment by: RON HUNT on 18th February 2012 at 09:41

There isn't an ally way between the Black Horse and Lowes It is at the other side of the Black Horse, just out of shot, It's still there it's called CHURCH GATE

The building that was the Black Horse is still there, it was a travel agent for a long time but I think it is empty at the moment.

Al there is a building there, but it isn't the original Black Horse one. It's a new build. Built at the same time they build the Barclay's Bank building

When the Black Horse closed down, the next occupant of the site was Dixons Photographics, before they amalgamated with Currys

The unholy bedfellows that brought about the demise of Wigan's historic beauty, and the reason I left in disgust was an alliance between Wigan Metro Borough Council, The Miner's Union and French Kier none of them had any empathy for the townspeople or the businesses of Wigan let alone the history

Wigan council didn't demolish it ,,the shell of the original pub is still there when the pub closed down early 70s I worked on it as a labourer to change it from the pub to currys electrical shop that opened 1974/75 ish

I lived in the Black Horse as a child and the golden lion across the road. So sad that neither one of them is there now
