The difference over a decade is great. I keep telling folks who complain about this "eyesore" that their judgements stem from the back and forget what a lovely facade it is from King St. Good photo.

I agree with all the comments and once again what is happening to Wigan with all it's history!!!! Shame on the planning department who authorise demolition in WIGAN.. I do wounder if they all live in Wigan or are they outsider's?????

the biggest problem with Wigan council is money talks great volumes and the back pockets are big and need filling

Has the Council ever given any explanation for the demise of this beautiful historic building?

Remember going in in 1966 when my dad registered a death. What a crying shame it looks this way

Living testament to the short sighted and blinkered approach of officialdom - we don't have to waste our breath in condemning their actions - this building does it far better than we can - long may it stand as testimony to their ignorance, insensitivity, and callous approach to Wigan's heritage and the feelings of the general population at large-their inaction beggars belief. Just how many other buildings like this can Wigan afford to lose before the town degenerates to the lowest common denominator - rubbish new architecture - no class, no appreciation of what is important and should be saved - just wake up the lot of you and show at least a modicum of aesthetic appreciation. It makes my blood boil every time I visit the town to see it. I feel better already for having got that off my chest but sadly I don't think anyone's at home, if they are they're keeping very, very quiet, typical of today's anonymous modern officials - no one is prepared to face the music. Just who is responsible? Name and shame.

Agreed! I once went to a meeting here, in the Mayor's Chamber, and it made me proud to be from Wigan; when I see it now, I now feel ashamed. The new "life centres" look like a prison and a glass box!

Money should have been spent to restore this building! Yet when money is spent on restoration there is an outcry of 'money should have been spent elsewhere!!!''
