What a marvellous photograph. Sheer joy and wonderment in those young faces captured for eternity in a moment of time.

Comment by: brian johnson on 30th January 2012 at 19:13

Catherine your right it is Tommy we used to knock about together as kids this picture has not half brought memories back we were happy then

This is precious! Even the baby is engrossed, though looking a little apprehensive! Gosh, this made me remember similar times at the Pantomime where I lived in OZ. Havent even THOUGHT about it since then.. The travelling Pantomime always set up in a big tent, and talk about how us kids screamed and screamed in the audience at the Big Bad Wolf lurking in the background in Red Riding Hood or something equally frightening. Seems like a dream. Have never thought or spoken about it to anyone in all these years. A lifetime ago for sure, a time lost forever...

Comment by: irene roberts on 31st January 2012 at 09:37

Sheryl, the fact that you have never spoken about it in all these years, and now you have, is what this site is all about. It is certainly a lovely picture of a more innocent age.

A wonderful photo.
Recognised Tommy straight away, even though I only got to know him when he was in his late 30s.

I recognised Tommy Woodcock.Next but one on his right is Freda or Margaret Fitzgerald. We called it The Park but it was tarmacced, no grass, etc. Spent many hours playing tick rugby or cricket with wickets chalked on the wall. A few Wigan Rugby players started off on there.

Comment by: Bill Woodcock on 9th February 2012 at 19:44

This was taken during the School summer holidays. It was on what we called "The Park" which was a piece of tarmacked land between Herbert St and Wilcock St.,and was used as a general play area for Rugby , Soccer and Cricket. It was also were we used to have our Bonfires.
The children I recognise are Tommy my young brother,Margaret Shuttleworth, the Fitzgeralds and Athertons, and maybe the tall boy at the back was Barber

Comment by: panc on 10th February 2012 at 14:49

Bill I can't see any Atherton's. Where are they?

Comment by: Bill Woodcock on 10th February 2012 at 15:22

Panc.
Not sure about Athertons, although there was a brother and sister within this age group, lived in Miry Lane. Also two of the women centre to left with babies are sisters Mary and Madge.
This is a brilliant snap shot of the times when few people went away on holiday, and the children played out together all day with minimum facilities, organising their own games and rules. We went to the Park and joined in any game that was going. No kit was needed

Comment by: panc on 12th February 2012 at 12:54

Bill Iam Frank Atherton from Haig St.Too old for this picture. I see Syd Myers and Harold Trowbridge and John Darbyshire (Fletcher St). I hear Tom Nicholson died last month.

Comment by: bill on 12th February 2012 at 20:37

Panc
There was also Frank Atherton older than this group living in Miry Lane with a younger brother and sister, and Harold and Jack Trowbridge living in Vere St

Comment by: panc on 13th February 2012 at 12:31

Bill Sorry but I meant to say that I see them now occasionally, not on the picture. Look under Haig St also.
