When tobaconists were exactly that, the place where everybody went for black twist and top Mill Snuff!

And "Holland House" Aromatic Tobacco, which I bought for my Dad every Christmas, even as a child. It was sold to me without question, as were the cigars sold in long silver-coloured tubes.

Who remembers Mr Cottriall who was manager of Ashton's for years? Harold, I think his name was. A very lovely man.

In the days that I smoked I would go there to have my gas lighter re-filled, it would last twice as long than by re-filling it myself with a canister. The only other place I have seen that was like Ashton's was a shop in the market hall at Durham, it also had the same smell of tobacco and snuff - took me right back.

As an ex miner this is making me want a chew.
Tony Brown would be my choice.

I remember a neighbour name of Bill Mitchinson working for Ashtons, they did wholesale as well as retail, Bill had a small Austin A 35 van which he drove as a salesman visiting premises throughout the district. Bill also was an extremely nice chap,a gentleman.

I went there when I was a miner. I used to chew tobacco and one of the favourites as well as tony brown was aromatic, I bought Murrays Irish roll there an ounce was nearly 2feet long!!

Old fashioned tobacconists always had wonderful displays of colourful cigarette and tobacco packets and a fragrance that is impossible to describe.
