Photographed in 1988 these fine old houses and shops were soon to be demolished.

Demolished or refurbished?

The buildings were demolished completely and replaced with something that looked vaguely similar.

The Charlton's (Queen's Hall Mission)had a much needed women and child's refuge there, a lot of abused wife's were very thankful for it in those days, it was always full to capacity too, sadly.

Alec Layland lived in the house at the bottom, the one without the scaffolding, the house had been a family home for some time, they were plumbers.

Remember the Charlton's at Queen's hall Mission and the good charity/jumble sales they used to have about once a month at Queen's Hall. That was in the 70s before it was rebuilt, there were good concerts there as well.

This is Standishgate not Wigan Lane.

True, it's NOT WIGAN LANE! The narrow entry behind the car in the right hand corner of the photo, is the entrance to Little London! I know who picked up the original name plate for Little London, from the rubble, when these houses were demolished.Cyril, The Leylands occupied at least 3 of these properties. His brother Fred also lived in one, and they also had the shop that was in this block, it can just be made out on this photo. It was the 1st property after the Little London entrance. Should I know you? I lived @ 116, 3 shops up from Little London
