that brings back memories. I used to walk along here from St John's school to my grandmas in Lowe St

I need a bit of help with this. I always thought Waterhayes was to the north of Greenough Street, near St. Georges Schoool. But that look like the multi-storie car park that was at the bottom of Mill Gate... so it looks like that footpath passes behind the Horseshoe pub.

Am I reading it wrong?

Dennis. the railings on the right are at the side of the River Douglas. The view is towards Wigan Little Theatre. The other photo is in the opposite direction towards Central Park. happy memories my grandma lived in School St.

i think the multi story is the one that was on Riverway where Debenhams is now.duby2

It was near Greenhough Street Dennis, you can see actually see Millgate very feintly in the distance and the Riverway/Debenham's car park, the camera lense would make them look closer than they actually were. If you look at the other Waterheyes photo Central Park floodlights are just visible in the sky.

Many years ago there was a gents' urinal at the end of this path, where the path met up with the mainroad. The stench certainly made your eyes water. If my memory serves me right, at the opposite end, I believe there was a similar convenience, on the other side of the bridge, in Greenough Street, near to were Calderbanks Scrap Metal business was situated

I remember having my portable tv fixed in one of those builings in the mid 80's

I worked there in the early 70's. The front door of the company was opposite the Ball & Boot. It was part of the Dobson Group which included Gullicks and English Tools. It manufactured industrial lighting.

was it walter heyes or water heyes the firm that was in the building ?

Alan Lad, the company was called Heyes though the area was called Waterheyes, think it was just coincidence.

Bill, do you remember Gerry Lanyon, Bert Derbyshire (my father)? One lad was deaf and dumb, I think his name was Peter, and another lad who I think played for Skelmersdale.

Just as a matter of interest Bernard, did your father attend St Catharine's Primary? That would be in the 1950's.

This was Heyes and Company Electrical Engineers. They produced flameproof electrical equipment for the mines. I served a six year apprenticeship there in the 1950 s .The address was Water Heyes,which ran alongside the Douglas fom W.L.T. the bridge at Greenough St

Water Heyes went from Greenough Street to Crompton street next to the River Douglas.I remember Visionhire televisions in a building here in the 1980s. The Oak Hotel is now on the site.There also used to be Clarence Street behind the Greenough Street shops with a small garage. Alliance Street still remains today, behind the Wigan Little Theatre.
