This photo was taken in the 1920s. The workman in the bottom right hand corner was working on the demolition of the old Legs Of Man public house.

Its a shame so much has been lost in Upholland, just think how it would look today if things had been renovated instead of pulled down. My Mum Dorothy Pearce (Alker) used to try and tell me what it was like, well thanks to the photos placed on Wigan World her descriptions were not far from the mark. Many thanks to those who take time out to enter there photos.

Mick and Martin,you are so right.Ihave a faint memory of being taken to visit in one of the buildings at the top of School Lane,by alady who "minded" me-This would have been during WW2, and my clearest recollection is that the elderly person we visited had a collection of Crown Derby bird figurines! I now own three or four of these myself.I must have remembered the visit when at Auction sales a few years ago.

The building on the left was a cobblers shop once owned by my grandfather Joseph Gaskell about 1930 's

A message for BILLY WILSON, Joseph Gaskell was a relative of mine, I have a tree on Ancestry with loads of info, I am stemned from THOMAS CATTERAL GASKELL, whom was a clogger in Parliament Street in the 1820's, and his descendants took over the shop over the years, there is a picture of one of them outside the shop on this site, just search GASKELL FAMILY and it will be shown, I have been in touch with the person who put up the picture but am still waiting for a reply........if you want, get in touch with me via my email......gagsotc@live.co.uk............GEORGE GASKELL
